Work Description

The Planning Department is looking for an exceptional person who enjoys working in a highly collaborative environment to serve our community and organization as a Senior Planner in the Long Range Planning Division.

Hillsboro offers the unique opportunity for you to work on a variety of different types of planning projects. The City is currently in the process of adopting the first update to our Comprehensive Plan since 1984. In your role as Senior Planner you will have an opportunity to develop implementation measures for the goals and policies in the Plan and to work internally and externally to actually implement the goals and policies. There will also be opportunities to create community plans for existing neighborhoods as well the opportunity to develop Concept Plans for potential Urban Growth Boundary expansion areas. The ideal candidate will have project management, critical thinking, and independent decision-making skills.

The department pro-actively works to create a complete community by planning for population growth, while preserving the environment, supporting public health, and sustaining economic prosperity. The department oversees the development and implementation of various long-range and short-range plans including multimodal transportation plans and projects, sustainable development plans and programs, land use coordination, environmental and habitat planning and programs, and performance monitoring to track implementation of plans.

A Senior Planer performs progressively complex professional planning work involving data collection and analysis, report preparation and public contact; assists in comprehensive and community planning; and performs related duties as required.

You possess a strong work ethic; possess the ability to prioritize tasks and work on a variety of projects with competing deadlines and be adaptable and open to new situations, ideas, and challenges.

You will conduct research, collect and compile information from a variety of sources, and participate in the preparation of reports to support the recommendation and implementation of policy and planning initiatives; conduct preliminary research and analysis of legislative, social, economic, demographic, transportation, land use, public health, and environmental data and trends.


Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Traffic or Civil Engineering, or related field and five years of municipal planning related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. The ideal candidate will have project management, critical thinking, and independent decision-making skills.
