2007 Scholarship Announcement
OAPA awarded the 2007 OAPA scholarships to Shana Sweitzer who graduated from the University of Oregon and Kate Lyman who graduated from Portland State University. Scholarship Committee Chair Lidwien Rahman got help from Marah Danielson in reviewing the applications and making a recommendation to the OAPA Board. They felt that Shana's application demonstrated a real passion for the planning field, especially as it applies to working with small cities and rural communities. Shana's focus is on sustainable development. She has had a variety of professional experiences, including the Eugene Business Sustainability Initiative, Institute for Policy Research and Innovation, Redefining Progress in San Francisco, and LCOG. She has volunteered in Peru in an effort to help local communities develop sustainable ecotourism, and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Montana. Shana is a Yocut Native American. Kate Lyman's area of concentration is transportation. She has had a progression of professional experiences, first as a graduate assistant in the Intelligent Transportation lab at PSU, then as an intern at Metro on the Regional Transportation Plan, and finally as an intern at PB, where she is now employed full-time position. Kate spent a year as an Americorps VISTA volunteer, and has been active in WTS. Interestingly, both Shana and Kate mentioned a desire to gain experience in planning but ultimately to become a policy decision maker or legislator. Once again, it was a pleasure to review all of the highly deserving applications, and to see such promising new professionals entering the field of planning. OAPA encourages the applicants who will still be students next year to apply again.
