Salem is looking for a talented individual to join our Planning team. We are seeking a Planner I or Planner II for a full time career position. The opportunity will allow you to work on a variety of current planning and long range projects. This position is open to an entry level planner (Planner I) or an experienced planner (Planner II) dependent on the chosen candidate’s experience.

Salem is the 3rd largest city in the State and is a fast growing community with many opportunities to be involved in planning for Salem’s future. The Planning Division consists of 9 full time planners and 1 GIS Analyst and includes 3 sections: Current Planning, Long Range Planning and Historic Preservation Planning.

The Planning Division is currently engaged in neighborhood planning efforts and embarking on a major project to address our future housing needs, among other long range planning efforts. We are also busy responding to the rebounding economy which is resulting in commercial redevelopment, new industrial developments and increased subdivisions and multi-family projects.

You will be able to work on a combination of current planning and/or long range planning including managing land use applications, reviewing building permits, staffing the planning information desk, explaining technical information to the public and decision makers, conducting broad public outreach, leading public meetings, presenting at public hearings and other duties as assigned. While many of the planners have areas that they specialize in, all of the planners work on a combination of current and long range planning and take turns staffing the planning information desk.

Qualifications

For a Planner I: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in planning or a related field.
For a Planner II: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in planning or two(2) years of experience in a related field.

Candidates will be evaluated to determine the classification level that they best meet – Planner I, or Planner II.

To qualify for this position you will need a bachelor’s degree in planning or a related field or any combination of experience and training providing considerable knowledge of principles and procedures of urban planning, architectural and site design review, research and analytical methodology and statistical techniques and application of planning principles to city, county and regional areas.

You must also possess excellent writing skills, the ability to present technical information to the general public, both orally and in writing, the ability to work effectively with others, effective time management skills and the ability to complete work with minimal supervision.
