Outreach for Planning

The Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association is excited to host the

Metro Council President Candidates Forum

Wednesday, March 10th from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

Heritage Room, Bridgeport BrewPub - in the Pearl District

Candidates Bob Stacey, Rex Burkholder and Tom Hughes have agreed to participate in a forum that focuses exclusively on the issues that we as planners care most about: urban and regional planning, transportation, urban design and livability, housing policy and economic development.  To reserve your ticket in advance, you are encouraged to register on line.

Professor Sy Adler, Ph.D., with the Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning, will moderate this important and timely event. Professor Adler has written extensively on Oregon and metropolitan area planning and transportation issues.  To pose specific questions to the candidates through the moderator, contact Professor Adler directly at: http://www.pdx.edu/usp/profile/meet-professor-sy-adler

From an urban and regional planning perspective, the Metro Council President may be the most important elected official in Oregon.  We are fortunate to have three highly qualified candidates - all of whom support state, regional and local planning. Each candidate brings extensive related experience and distinct viewpoints to the table:

  • Bob Stacey, FAICP as Director of 1000 Friends of Oregon; Chief of Staff to Congressman Earl Blumenauer; Senior Policy Advisor to Governor Barbara Roberts; Policy and Planning Director for Tri-Met; City of Portland Planning Director; and Partner at Ball Janik LLP.

  • Rex Burkholder as a Metro Councilor; co-founder of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Coalition for a Livable Future; staff for the US Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service; school teacher; and bicycle paperboy for the Des Moines Register.

  • Tom Hughes as Mayor, City Councilor and Planning Commissioner in Hillsboro; President of and lobbyist for the League of Oregon Cities; lobbyist for Tonkin Torp LLP; Washington County Charter Committee member; and civics and history school teacher.
